Improve the rollout
A crosswind landing is a geometry problem. The air mass you're flying in is moving sideways across the runway, and you need your ground track down the centreline with your wheels aligned to it at the moment of contact. There are two techniques that will help, the crab and the sideslip.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,035 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,035 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 231 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Black Square Starship N45FL departed from Mariehamn Airport, rolling out on runway 21. The takeoff distance covered 1,066 meters, which was 56% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 132 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots blowing from 149 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Mariehamn, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of the airport. The climb started at an altitude of 1,080 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 27,031 feet, an increase of 25,951 feet in just 13 minutes. During this climb, the aircraft covered a distance of 43 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase began 2 miles west of Blidoe, Sweden, and lasted for 82 minutes, covering a distance of 345 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile south-east of Hong, Denmark. The descent started at an altitude of 27,636 feet and ended at 2,252 feet, a decrease of 25,384 feet in 17 minutes. During this descent, the aircraft covered a distance of 69 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase was briefly resumed 3 miles north of Stakendorf, Germany, and lasted for just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 26 at Kiel-Holtenau Airport was made from the east, heading 263.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 26, which was 1,035 meters long. The threshold speed was slightly below the target at 100 knots, but the touchdown distance was good at 230 meters. The touchdown speed was also good at 88 knots, but the touchdown rate was fair at -220 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.9 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots blowing from 216 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 372 meters, which was 36% of the runway length. The total flight distance was 469 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 120 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 709 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, Black Square Starship N45FL, successfully landed at EDHK Kiel-Holtenau Airport with a score of 95.3%. The final approach to runway 26 was initiated from the east, heading 263.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,267 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating a stable and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 100 knots, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown distance of 230 meters was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and speed. However, the touchdown speed of 88 knots was slightly higher than the target speed, which may indicate a slight overcorrection by the pilot.
The touchdown rate of -220 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft's descent was not as smooth as it could have been. This may be attributed to the pilot's attempt to maintain a stable approach despite the slight deviation in threshold speed.
One notable issue during the landing was the misalignment of the runway touchdown position, which was off-centerline by 9.9 meters. This may have been caused by a combination of factors, including wind conditions and the pilot's control inputs. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 11 knots at 216°, contributed to a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance of 372 meters was 36% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.4 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have struggled to maintain a stable alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations in terms of speed and alignment. The pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and speed was demonstrated, but there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining a smooth touchdown rate and stable alignment during the rollout phase.
