Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,580 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 284 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 34C at OEJN King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The takeoff distance was 1,226 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 180 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 2 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,066 feet above sea level to 37,372 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,305 feet in 34 minutes. The distance covered during this period was 240 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 10 miles northwest of OEUM Ummlejj Airport in the Tabuk Region of Saudi Arabia. This phase lasted for 208 minutes and covered a distance of 2,221 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 19 miles northwest of Koksijde in Flanders, Belgium. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 38,166 feet above sea level to 2,463 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,703 feet in 8 minutes. The distance covered during this period was 157 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started overhead Bagworth in Leicestershire, England. This phase lasted for only 3 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 09 at EGNX East Midlands Airport, which it approached from the west at a heading of 88.0 degrees. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 25 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The aircraft landed on runway 09 at EGNX East Midlands Airport, which had a length of 2,580 meters. The touchdown distance was 285 meters, and the touchdown speed was 122 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -213 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 742 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,636 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 261 minutes. The aircraft used 15,279 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at East Midlands Airport (EGNX) on runway 09, achieving a score of 99.0%. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 88.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,297 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were satisfactory, with a good threshold height and speed of 129 knots. The touchdown distance of 285 meters was also within acceptable limits, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 122 knots was also good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable approach and landing configuration.
However, the touchdown rate of -213 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, indicating a slightly steeper-than-desired descent rate. This may be attributed to the pilot's decision to prioritize a smooth touchdown over a more gradual descent rate.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 14°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots from 25°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the aircraft's stable and controlled approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 742 meters was 29% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and controlled configuration during the landing roll.
Overall, the Boeing 737-700 aircraft's landing at East Midlands Airport was successful, with a high score and satisfactory performance in most areas. However, the slightly steeper-than-desired touchdown rate and minimal deviations from the ideal performance suggest opportunities for improvement in future landings.
