Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,804 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 441 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 26L at KONT Ontario International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,361 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 310 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was also 2 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile east of Ontario, California, and the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,978 feet above sea level to 34,865 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,887 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 122 nautical miles.
After reaching the desired cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 10 miles northeast of L64 Desert Center Airport in California. This phase lasted for 327 minutes, covering a distance of 1,980 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead NK83 Nettie's Place Airport in Delanson, New York. The descent from 35,505 feet above sea level to 1,237 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,269 feet in 29 minutes, covered a distance of 148 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 33L at KBOS Logan International Airport was made from the southeast, heading 315.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,208 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 33L was successful, with a runway length of 2,804 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 133 knots. The touchdown distance was 443 meters, and the touchdown speed was 131 knots, both of which were good. The touchdown rate was also good at -175 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 320 degrees. The crosswind was 0 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,423 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 2,258 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 285 minutes. The aircraft used 11,100 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 33L at KBOS Logan International Airport, demonstrating exceptional piloting skills and adherence to standard operating procedures. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,208 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach speed and threshold height were well within the acceptable limits, with a threshold speed of 133 knots and a good threshold height. This ensured a smooth and controlled descent onto the runway. The touchdown distance of 443 meters was also within the expected range, indicating a well-executed landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -5°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from 320°. However, the crosswind component was negligible at 0 knots, and the headwind component was 3 knots, which had a minimal impact on the landing. The pilots effectively managed the aircraft's speed and direction to maintain a very good runway touchdown alignment.
The touchdown speed of 131 knots was also within the acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -175 feet per minute (fpm) was well within the expected range. This indicates that the pilots maintained a controlled descent and touchdown, minimizing the risk of damage to the aircraft or injury to the passengers.
The total landing distance of 1,423 meters was 51% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilots executed a precise and controlled landing, minimizing the use of runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 on runway 33L at KBOS Logan International Airport was a textbook example of safe and efficient flight operations. The pilots demonstrated exceptional skills and adherence to standard operating procedures, ensuring a smooth and controlled landing.
