Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,532 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,532 m of the 2,132 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 476 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 30 at EKVG Vágar Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,001 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 28 knots coming from a direction of 270 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 13 knots and a headwind of 25 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Sorvagur in the Faroe Islands. The climb took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 72 nautical miles, with the aircraft ascending from 1,119 feet above sea level to 30,800 feet above sea level, a total increase of 29,682 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 30 miles south east of Sumba in the Faroe Islands. This phase lasted for 102 minutes and covered a distance of 231 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 7 miles south east of Drumnadrochit in Scotland. The descent took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 85 nautical miles, with the aircraft descending from 30,570 feet above sea level to 1,408 feet above sea level, a total decrease of 29,162 feet.
The final approach to runway 06 at EGPH Edinburgh Airport was made from the south west, with the aircraft heading 59.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 06, which had a length of 2,132 meters. The threshold height at 68 feet above ground level was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 140 knots. The touchdown point was 54 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 138 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -474 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots coming from a direction of 40 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 1,445 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 396 nautical miles, and the flight took 84 minutes. The aircraft used 4,176 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at Edinburgh Airport (EGPH) on runway 06, achieving a score of 91.0%. The final approach was initiated from the south-west, heading 59.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were satisfactory, with a threshold speed of 140 knots, which was within the target range. However, the threshold height at 68 feet agl was above the target, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal approach path. Despite this, the touchdown point was 54 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation.
The touchdown speed of 138 knots was also within the target range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -474 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down with a slightly higher than ideal rate of descent. This could be attributed to the aircraft's altitude and airspeed at the time of touchdown.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 40°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft's approach.
The total landing distance of 1,445 meters was 68% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining to stop safely. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with some minor deviations from the ideal approach and landing performance.
