Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,554 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,554 m of the 3,285 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 696 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 05R at Auckland International Airport (NZAA). The takeoff distance was 1,700 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 162 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 120 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead Auckland International Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,046 feet above sea level to 5,728 feet above sea level in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise, which started 3 miles east of East Tamaki and lasted for 20 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles east of Pakuranga and descending from 5,703 feet above sea level to 3,218 feet above sea level in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The enroute descent was followed by another level cruise, which started 2 miles northwest of Tamaki and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 9 miles southwest of Titirangi and descending from 2,989 feet above sea level to 1,084 feet above sea level in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05R at Auckland International Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading 71.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,064 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 05R, which had a length of 3,285 meters. The threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 149 knots.
The touchdown point was 282 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 145 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -303 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as those at the time of takeoff.
The total landing distance was 1,476 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 54 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 47 minutes. The aircraft used 1,827 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 05R at Auckland International Airport (NZAA) with a score of 85.8%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 71.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,064 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 3,285 meters.
The threshold height at 70 feet agl was found to be well above the target, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a safe altitude during the approach. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 149 knots, suggesting that the aircraft may have been slightly faster than desired during the approach. The touchdown point was located 282 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively significant deviation.
The touchdown speed of 145 knots was a little fast, indicating that the aircraft may have been experiencing some drag or other factors that contributed to a higher-than-desired speed at touchdown. The touchdown rate was firm at -303 feet per minute (fpm), which is a relatively high rate of descent. This may have been due to the aircraft's speed or the pilots' decision to maintain a steeper descent angle.
The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a combination of factors including wind, aircraft alignment, or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 4 knots at 120°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 3 knots, which is relatively minimal.
The total landing distance was 1,476 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. This is a relatively long landing distance, suggesting that the aircraft may have been experiencing some drag or other factors that contributed to a longer-than-desired landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to the same factors that contributed to the initial touchdown position misalignment.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some areas for improvement, including a slightly fast touchdown speed, a firm touchdown rate, and some misalignment issues with the touchdown position and rollout alignment.
