Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,963 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,963 m of the 3,075 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,101 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 10R at Dublin Airport (EIDW), with a takeoff distance of 1,560 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 160 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 24°C temperature and a wind speed of 17 knots at 90°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 16 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile north-east of Ballymun, Ireland, and the aircraft climbed from 1,213 feet above sea level to 34,498 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,285 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 125 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Threapwood, England, and lasted for 19 minutes, covering a distance of 136 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 34,513 feet above sea level to 17,711 feet above sea level, a decrease of 16,802 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 14 miles north-west of Fort-Mardyck, France, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent from 17,740 feet above sea level to 11,807 feet above sea level, a decrease of 5,933 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started overhead Aarsele, Belgium, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 11,222 feet above sea level to 6,771 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,451 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile north-east of Kapelle-op-den-Bos, Belgium, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent from 6,219 feet above sea level to 2,011 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,208 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 1 mile north of Testelt, Belgium, and lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 25R at Brussels Airport (EBBR) was from the north-east, with a heading of 245.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,242 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 25R was successful, with a touchdown point 653 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was firm at -365 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 23°C temperature and a wind speed of 12 knots at 169°. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,850 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 14.3 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 474 nautical miles, taking 98 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,554 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Brussels Airport (EBBR) on runway 25R, achieving a score of 77.7%. The final approach was initiated from the north-east, heading 245.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,242 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach to the runway was generally good, with a threshold speed of 146 knots, which met the target. However, the threshold height at 89 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating a slight deviation in the aircraft's descent. Despite this, the touchdown speed of 127 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -365 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, indicating a controlled descent.
The touchdown point was located 653 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the intended landing spot. This may have been due to the aircraft's slightly misaligned runway touchdown position, which was off-centerline by 6.6 meters. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 23°C and a wind speed of 12 knots at 169°, may have also contributed to the deviation.
The total landing distance of 1,850 meters was 60% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned, being off-centerline by 14.3 meters. This may indicate a slight deviation in the aircraft's braking performance or the pilot's control inputs during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some deviations from the target parameters, particularly in terms of threshold height and touchdown point location. These deviations may be addressed through further training or adjustments to the aircraft's approach and landing procedures.
