Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,968 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,968 m of the 3,362 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 679 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 30R at OBBI Bahrain International Airport. The takeoff distance was 990 meters, which is 30% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 164 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 310°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile north of Al Muharraq, Bahrain, and ascended from an altitude of 1,006 feet above sea level to 37,112 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,106 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 117 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 33 miles southwest of OIBV Lavan Airport, Iran, and lasted for 116 minutes, covering a distance of 1,057 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles southwest of Jhang Sadr, Pakistan, and the aircraft descended from an altitude of 37,089 feet above sea level to 1,978 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,111 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 36R at OPLA Allama Iqbal International Airport was made from the south, with a heading of 1.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,255 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 36R was successful, with a touchdown point 266 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 140 knots, but the touchdown rate was firm at -302 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 20°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 30°.
The total landing distance was 1,890 meters, which is 56% of the runway length. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,296 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 166 minutes. The aircraft used 18,372 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at OPLA Allama Iqbal International Airport, achieving a score of 94.1%. The final approach to runway 36R was conducted from the south, with a heading of 1.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold speed of 144 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly faster than ideal, indicating that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more effectively to achieve a smoother touchdown. The touchdown point was located 266 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance.
The touchdown rate of -302 feet per minute was firm, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown effectively. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 30°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,890 meters was 56% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft during the rollout phase of the landing. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling during the final approach and touchdown phases.
