Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,744 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 386 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 09 at Djerba Zarzis International Airport (DTTJ). The takeoff distance was 1,084 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 23°C and winds of 7 knots at 40°. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was also 5 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Djerba Zarzis International Airport Mellita, where the aircraft climbed from 1,054 feet above sea level to 37,860 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,806 feet in 33 minutes, covering a distance of 213 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 10 miles east of Besbes, Algeria, and lasted for 115 minutes, covering a distance of 910 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 17 miles southeast of Ventnor, Isle of Wight, England. The descent from 38,354 feet above sea level to 1,626 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,728 feet, took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 109 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22 at London Stansted Airport (EGSS) was made from the northeast, heading 223.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,270 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 22 was successful, with a runway length of 2,744 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 132 knots. The touchdown distance was 385 meters, and the touchdown speed was 122 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -221 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 19°C and winds of 4 knots at 200°. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 852 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,238 nautical miles, which was covered in 170 minutes. The aircraft used 9,096 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at London Stansted Airport, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The final approach to runway 22 was conducted from the north east, with a heading of 223.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 132 knots. The touchdown distance of 385 meters was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 122 knots was also good. However, the touchdown rate of -221 feet per minute was only fair, indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a slightly higher rate of descent than desired.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 4.6 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 200°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 852 meters was 31% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to touch down and come to a stop quickly, with a good runway rollout alignment. The rollout alignment was particularly impressive, with the aircraft tracking very closely to the centreline of the runway. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop safely and efficiently.
