Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,576 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,576 m of the 2,744 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 938 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 06 at Edinburgh Airport (EGPH), where the aircraft, an Airbus A320, accelerated down the 1,076-meter runway, covering 50% of its length. The takeoff distance was sufficient, and the aircraft lifted off at a speed of 156 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 59 degrees, resulting in a headwind of 11 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile northeast of EGPH, rising from an altitude of 1,117 feet above sea level to 34,044 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,927 feet in just 18 minutes. This climb phase covered a distance of 71 nautical miles. The aircraft then transitioned into a level cruise, starting 1 mile southwest of Aspatria in Cumbria, England, and lasting for 9 minutes as it covered 64 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase began 1 mile northwest of Hoghton in Lancashire, England, where the aircraft descended from 34,121 feet above sea level to 3,121 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,000 feet in 34 minutes, covering a distance of 149 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time overhead EGWR High Cross Airstrip in Hertfordshire, England, lasting for 4 minutes as it covered 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04 at London Stansted Airport (EGSS) was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading 43.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,577 feet above ground level and 3 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on the 2,744-meter runway, with the threshold height above the target and the threshold speed slightly above the target at 142 knots.
The touchdown point was 601 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 126 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -460 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 15 knots from a direction of 110 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 14 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,575 meters, covering 57% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 20.1 meters from the centerline. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 297 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 2,669 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft has successfully landed at EGSS London Stansted Airport, but with some notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. The final approach was initiated from the south-west, heading 43.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,577 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 04, which has a length of 2,744 meters.
Upon landing, the threshold height was found to be above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly higher than desired at the moment of touchdown. Additionally, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots, suggesting that the aircraft may have been going a bit too fast. However, the touchdown speed of 126 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown speed was considered good.
The touchdown point was located 601 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing spot. Furthermore, the touchdown rate was hard at -460 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft may have experienced a more abrupt touchdown than desired. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the hard touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 15 knots at 110°. The crosswind component was 14 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the deviations from the ideal landing parameters.
The total landing distance was 1,575 meters, which is 57% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, but it may have been influenced by the hard touchdown and the misaligned runway touchdown position. The runway rollout alignment was also found to be misaligned by 20.1 meters from the centerline, which could have contributed to the overall deviation from the ideal landing parameters.
Overall, while the Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at EGSS London Stansted Airport, there were several notable deviations from the ideal landing parameters. These deviations may have been influenced by a combination of factors, including the local weather conditions and the aircraft's performance.
