Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,888 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,888 m of the 3,108 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 667 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Zagreb Franjo Tuđman International Airport (LDZA), the Boeing 777-300 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. With a takeoff distance of 1,160 meters, which equated to 36% of the available runway length, the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 162 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 31°C, with a gentle wind of 3 knots from a direction of 100°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it passed over Velika Kosnica, a point located in the Zagreb County of Croatia. The enroute climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from an altitude of 1,338 feet above sea level to 35,990 feet, an increase of 34,651 feet in just 16 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 5 minutes and covered 41 nautical miles, before initiating another climb phase. This climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from 36,143 feet to 36,988 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a prolonged level cruise phase, which lasted for 212 minutes and covered a significant distance of 1,625 nautical miles.
As the aircraft began its descent into Gran Canaria Airport (GCLP), it passed over the Canary Islands, Spain, and initiated a descent from 36,996 feet to 1,387 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 03L was made from the south, with the aircraft aligning perfectly with the runway. The landing was executed at a speed of 145 knots, with a touchdown point located 244 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The total landing distance was 1,800 meters, which equated to 58% of the available runway length. Following a smooth rollout, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,920 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 263 minutes and a fuel consumption of 30,961 kilograms.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 03L at GCLP Gran Canaria Airport with a satisfactory approach quality, demonstrating good control and precision. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 1,325 feet above ground level (agl) at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold, heading 21.0 degrees. The threshold height was well-managed, and the threshold speed of 145 knots was achieved, indicating a smooth and controlled approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed of 140 knots was slightly above the recommended value, resulting in a touchdown rate of -281 feet per minute, which was considered fair. However, the touchdown point was 244 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the ideal touchdown location. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the touchdown phase.
The Boeing 777-300 rolled out on the runway with perfect alignment, demonstrating excellent control and precision. The total landing distance of 1,800 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a headwind of 8 knots, contributed to a smooth and controlled landing. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with a score of 93.5%.
