Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,576 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,576 ft of the 6,530 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,561 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 04L at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. The takeoff distance was 3,953 feet, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 85°F and winds of 6 knots at 60°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 6 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile northeast of PHNL, where the aircraft climbed from 1,018 feet above sea level to 14,036 feet above sea level, an increase of 13,018 feet in 7 minutes and covering 27 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 7 miles west of PHDH Kawaihapai Airfield Mokuleia and lasted 2 minutes, covering 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 18 miles west of PHDH, descending from 13,592 feet above sea level to 3,014 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,578 feet in 9 minutes and covering 36 nautical miles. Another enroute level cruise started 16 miles east of Kapa'a and lasted 6 minutes, covering 14 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 2 miles east of Anahola, where the aircraft descended from 2,921 feet above sea level to 249 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,672 feet in 4 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 17 at PHLI Lihue Airport was from the north, heading 175.0° at 0 nautical miles and 140 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 17 at PHLI Lihue Airport was successful, with a runway length of 6,530 feet. The threshold height was above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 142 knots. However, the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 144 knots, but the touchdown rate was fair at -218 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 75°F and winds of 3 knots at 100°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 5,268 feet, which accounted for 81% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 8 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 103 nautical miles, taking 43 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,635 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at PHLI Lihue Airport, but with some notable areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 175.0° at 0 nm and 140 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 17, which has a length of 6,530 ft.
The threshold height at 63 ft agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was good at 142 kt, suggesting that the pilot maintained a suitable speed during the approach. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway, which may indicate a slightly high approach speed or a longer than necessary flare.
The touchdown speed of 144 kt was a little fast, which could have contributed to the long touchdown point. The touchdown rate of -218 fpm was fair, indicating that the aircraft was not excessively hard on the landing. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 ft from the centreline, which may require some adjustments to the approach path.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 75°F and a light wind of 3 kt at 100°. The crosswind was minimal at 2 kt, and there was no headwind. The total landing distance was 5,268 ft, which is 81% of the available runway length. This suggests that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for a safe stop.
The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there are some areas for improvement, including reducing the approach speed and improving the touchdown point alignment.
