Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed, off the runway's 3° glideslope and off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,011 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,011 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 94 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The 3.90 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was conducted in an OV-10 Bronco aircraft, departing from runway 35 at Calgary / Springbank Airport (CYBW). Taxiing from the parking area to the runway took approximately 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its departure roll, taking off from the runway with a takeoff distance of 740 meters, which was 49% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 84 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead CYBW Calgary / Springbank Airport, and climbed from an altitude of 4,158 feet above sea level (asl) to 5,588 ft asl, an increase of 1,430 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 2 miles northwest of Cochrane, Alberta, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, starting 1 mile southwest of CKY8 Arkayla Springs Airport, and climbed from 6,094 ft asl to 6,679 ft asl, an increase of 585 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The flight continued with several enroute climbs and descents, with the aircraft reaching an altitude of 9,437 ft asl over Banff, Alberta. The enroute level cruise started 8 miles northwest of CYBA Banff Airport and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 08 at CYBW Calgary / Springbank Airport, heading 82.0° at 1 nautical mile and 1,558 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was conducted on runway 08, which had a length of 1,011 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was 88 knots. The touchdown distance was 93 meters, and the touchdown speed was 84 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was very heavy at -924 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 48.9 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15°C, with a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the tailwind component was 1 knot. The aircraft then began its taxiing to the parking area, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 124 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 40 minutes. The aircraft used 0 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at Calgary / Springbank Airport, scoring 78.5% in the evaluation. The final approach to runway 08 was initiated from the west, with a heading of 82.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 1,558 feet above ground level.
The aircraft demonstrated good control during the landing, with a threshold speed of 88 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 93 meters was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable approach and executed a smooth touchdown. Furthermore, the touchdown speed of 84 knots was within the recommended limits, signifying that the pilot managed to slow down the aircraft effectively.
However, there were some areas of concern during the landing. The touchdown rate was very heavy, at -924 feet per minute, which is significantly higher than the recommended rate. This could indicate that the pilot may have applied excessive braking or that the aircraft's descent was not properly controlled. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 48.9 meters from the centerline, which could pose a risk to the aircraft's stability and control during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from 270°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the tailwind component was minimal, at 1 knot. These conditions would not have significantly impacted the aircraft's performance during the landing. Overall, while the landing was successful, there are areas that require improvement to enhance the pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance.
