Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 4,997 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 4,997 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,308 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 24 at CYCK Chatham Kent Airport. The aircraft, a Vision Jet, accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 1,580 feet, which was 35% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 96 knots, marking the start of the takeoff phase.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 270°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was also 2 knots. The aircraft continued to climb, reaching an altitude of 11,510 feet above sea level in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles. This marked the end of the enroute climb phase.
The enroute level cruise phase began 1 mile south-east of CRN2 Ridgetown, where the aircraft leveled off at an altitude of 11,510 feet. This phase lasted for 23 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 115 nautical miles. The cruise phase was followed by the enroute descent phase, which started 2 miles south of Vineland. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 11,390 feet to 1,592 feet in just 8 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, CYSN Niagara District Airport, it began its final approach to runway 24 from the north-east. The aircraft was heading 234.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold and at an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level. The local weather conditions at the airport were a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 269°, with a crosswind component of 3 knots and a headwind component of 3 knots.
The landing phase was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 66 knots. The touchdown distance was 1,298 feet, which was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -40 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect. The total landing distance was 1,774 feet, which was 36% of the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
The total flight distance was 147 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 39 minutes. Notably, the aircraft used no fuel during the flight, indicating a highly efficient operation.
The Vision Jet successfully completed a landing at CYSN Niagara District Airport, achieving a score of 99.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 234.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 24, which has a length of 4,997 feet. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly too high at 86 knots, which may have required some adjustments by the pilot to ensure a smooth touchdown.
The touchdown distance was good at 1,298 feet, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 66 knots. The touchdown rate of -40 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating that the aircraft touched down smoothly and without any excessive deceleration. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and winds of 4 knots from 269°. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 3 knots, which did not pose any significant challenges for the pilot.
The total landing distance was 1,774 feet, which is 36% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a stop quickly and efficiently. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline as it rolled out after touchdown.
Overall, the Vision Jet's landing at CYSN Niagara District Airport was a success, with the aircraft performing well in terms of speed, distance, and alignment. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth and controlled manner in which the aircraft touched down and rolled out on the runway.
