Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,203 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,254 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Vnukovo International Airport (UUWW), which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a P180 FFX, then departed from runway 24 and took off with a takeoff distance of 2,284 feet, which was 20% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 118 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 22°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 239°. The crosswind component was 1 knot, while the headwind component was 6 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of Annino in the Moscow Oblast, Russia. The climb took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 84 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,653 feet above sea level to 36,581 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,929 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 8 miles southwest of Gagarin Airport (UGAG) in the Smolensk Oblast, Russia. This cruise phase lasted for 40 minutes and covered a distance of 944 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile north of Hochfilzen in the Tirol, Austria. The descent took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 80 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 36,791 feet above sea level to 13,262 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,529 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 4 miles northwest of Imst in the Tirol, Austria. This cruise phase lasted for 4 minutes and covered a distance of 19 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting overhead Seefeld in Tirol, Austria. The descent took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 11 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 12,770 feet above sea level to 3,439 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,331 feet.
The final approach to runway 26 at Innsbruck Airport (LOWI) was made from the east, with a heading of 256.0° at an altitude of 1,444 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing was made on runway 26, which had a length of 6,203 feet. The threshold speed was good at 120 knots, and the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was 99 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at 1 foot per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 50°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 172°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. The total landing distance was 4,472 feet, which was 72% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The flight then ended with taxiing to the parking area from the runway, which took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,147 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 79 minutes. The aircraft used 1,828 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft, identified as FFX P180 03 01, successfully landed on runway 26 at Innsbruck Airport (LOWI) with a score of 89.8%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 256.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,444 feet above ground level (agl).
The pilot executed a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 120 knots. However, the touchdown point was quite far down the runway, utilizing more than 50% of the available runway length. The touchdown speed of 99 knots was still within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of 1 foot per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 50°F and a gentle wind of 2 knots from 172°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and there was no headwind. These conditions likely contributed to the smoothness of the landing.
The total landing distance of 4,472 feet was 72% of the available runway length, which is a relatively long distance. Nevertheless, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, with some areas for improvement, such as reducing the touchdown point distance.
