Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 3,989 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the full 3,989 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 959 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The F-35B Lightning II took off from runway 30 at CYHM John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, a short distance of less than 1 nm, in under 1 minute. The takeoff distance was 437 ft, which is 5% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 74 kt, with a local temperature of 59 °F and a wind speed of 3 kt at 269 °. The crosswind was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind was 3 kt.
As the aircraft climbed out of CYHM, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 6,550 ft asl from 1,785 ft asl in just 3 minutes. This climb covered a distance of 9 nm. The aircraft then started its enroute descent, beginning 2 miles south east of Binbrook, Ontario. The descent from 6,575 ft asl to 347 ft asl took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 36 nm.
The final approach to runway 26 at CYTZ Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 252.0 ° at 0 nm and 98 ft agl. The landing on the 3,989 ft runway was notable for a threshold height that was significantly above target and a threshold speed that was excessively high at 602 kt. However, the touchdown distance was good at 1,006 ft, with a touchdown speed of 37 kt and an excellent touchdown rate of -100 fpm.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 18 ft from the centreline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,077 ft, which is 27% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as during takeoff, with a temperature of 59 °F and a wind speed of 3 kt at 270 °. The crosswind was minimal at 1 kt, while the headwind was 3 kt.
The total flight distance was 47 nm, taking 10 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 2,687 lbs of fuel during the flight.
The F-35B Lightning II aircraft successfully landed at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Centre Airport (CYTZ) on runway 26. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 252.0° at an altitude of 98 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft's approach was evaluated based on several key performance metrics.
The threshold height at 87 feet agl was significantly above the target, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly high on its approach. However, this did not seem to affect the overall landing performance. The threshold speed of 602 knots was excessively high, suggesting that the pilot may have been pushing the aircraft to its limits. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 1,006 feet was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 37 knots was also within acceptable limits.
One of the standout aspects of this landing was the excellent touchdown rate of -100 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the aircraft touched down with a high degree of control and precision, minimizing the risk of damage to the aircraft or the runway. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 18 feet from the centreline, but this did not appear to have any significant impact on the overall landing performance.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions would have made the landing relatively straightforward for the pilot.
The total landing distance of 1,077 feet was 27% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. Overall, this landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and with minimal deviation from the centreline.
