Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,316 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,316 ft of the 7,477 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,359 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 19R at Tampa International Airport (KTPA) in Tampa, Florida. The takeoff distance was 3,266 feet, which was 30% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Tampa, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 135 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,072 feet above sea level to 36,160 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,088 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 4 miles southeast of Fort Atkinson Plantation Airpark (9FD7) in Florida and lasted for 89 minutes, covering a distance of 673 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 4 miles east of Mentone Airport (C92) in Indiana and took 28 minutes to descend from 36,072 feet above sea level to 1,950 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,122 feet. The descent covered a distance of 97 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 27R at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (KORD) was made from the east, heading 270.0 degrees, at 4 nautical miles and 1,270 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 27R was successful, with a touchdown point 991 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 131 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -239 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 34 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind of 9 knots at 299 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the headwind was 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,048 feet, which was 68% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft took 16 minutes to taxi to the parking from the runway, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 914 nautical miles, and the flight took 165 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 14,321 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed on runway 27R at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport, achieving a score of 89.7%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach to the runway was precise, with a threshold height that was above the target, indicating a slight overshoot. However, the threshold speed was within the acceptable range at 139 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 131 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate, however, was fair at -239 feet per minute (fpm), suggesting a slightly steeper descent than ideal. The touchdown point was 991 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight overrunning of the runway. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centerline, which could be a concern for future approaches.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 34°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from 299°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing, as the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown.
The total landing distance was 5,048 feet, which accounted for 68% of the available runway length. This is a relatively high percentage, indicating that the aircraft may have had some difficulty stopping within the designated runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft was able to safely touch down on runway 27R at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The score of 89.7% indicates that there is room for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown rate and runway alignment. However, the aircraft's performance was generally good, and the crew was able to maintain control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown.
