Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,285 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 446 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 05R at Auckland International Airport (NZAA). The takeoff distance was 1,715 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 162 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 131 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,001 feet above sea level to 5,971 feet above sea level. This climb of 4,970 feet was achieved in just 3 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 5 miles east of East Tamaki, and it lasted for 24 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 38 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 10 miles south-west of Parakai, and it took the aircraft from an altitude of 5,992 feet above sea level to 1,308 feet above sea level. This descent of 4,684 feet was achieved in 8 minutes and covered a distance of 26 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 05R at NZAA was made from the south-west, with the aircraft heading at 71.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,279 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 05R was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 136 knots and a distance of 445 meters. The touchdown rate was firm at -334 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 130 degrees.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 81 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 48 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 1,931 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Auckland International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 71.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,279 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, setting the stage for a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 05R, which has a length of 3,285 meters. The threshold height at 55 feet agl was slightly above the target, but this did not seem to affect the overall performance of the landing. The threshold speed was well within the acceptable range at 139 knots, indicating a controlled descent.
The touchdown distance of 445 meters was also satisfactory, and the touchdown speed of 136 knots was within the desired limits. The touchdown rate of -334 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled and stable landing. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 130°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. These conditions did not seem to pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,182 meters was 36% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to maintain a high level of control and stability throughout the landing process. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline after touchdown.
Overall, the landing of the Airbus A321 at Auckland International Airport was a success, with a high score of 98.5%. The aircraft performed well in a variety of conditions, demonstrating its ability to handle a range of scenarios with precision and control.
