Smooth the climb
A good takeoff has a defined shape. It also has a defined end. For an airliner that's thrust reduction and acceleration, commonly somewhere around 1,000 to 1,500 ft above the airfield depending on the operator, while for a light aircraft it's established at Vy with the flaps on schedule. Most simmers have no defined end to their takeoff, which is exactly why it never gets judged.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,539 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,831 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 17 at the Manzanita Airport, a small airfield known as 6CL4. The aircraft, a C185F Skywagon Fairchild, took off with a takeoff distance of 445 feet, which was 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 63 knots, a moderate speed for a takeoff from a short runway.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 59°F and a wind of 20 knots from a direction of 287°. The crosswind component was 18 knots, while the tailwind component was 9 knots. These conditions would have presented a challenge for the pilot, but the aircraft's design and the pilot's skills would have helped to mitigate the effects of the wind.
The enroute level cruise started overhead the Manzanita Airport, and the aircraft flew for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. This was a brief period of level flight, and the aircraft then began its descent from 2,941 feet above sea level to 1,884 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,057 feet in 2 minutes. This descent covered a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then leveled off again, this time starting 2 miles west of Nipinnawasee, and flew for another 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. This was followed by a climb from 1,742 feet above sea level to 2,729 feet above sea level, an increase of 987 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another period of level flight, starting 3 miles southeast of the Grupe Ranch Airport, and flew for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. This was the longest period of level flight during the entire flight.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 1,593 feet above sea level to 711 feet above sea level, a decrease of 883 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. This descent was followed by a final approach to runway 30 at the Madera Municipal Airport, which was flown from the southeast, heading 315°.
The landing was made on runway 30, which was 5,539 feet long. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed of 79 knots. The touchdown point was 608 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 59 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -124 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 2,544 feet, which was 46% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The total flight distance was 35 nautical miles, and the flight used -1 pound of fuel, indicating that the aircraft was able to land with a small amount of fuel remaining.
The aircraft, a C185F Skywagon, successfully landed at KMAE Madera Municipal Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its landing technique. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 315.0° at 1 nautical mile and 451 feet above ground level (agl). This approach angle and distance allowed the pilot to maintain a good visual reference of the runway and its surroundings.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 30, which has a length of 5,539 feet. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the pilot maintained a safe altitude above the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed, coming in at 79 knots. This may have been due to the pilot's cautious approach or the aircraft's performance characteristics.
The touchdown point was located 608 feet beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot maintained good control of the aircraft during the landing, and the touchdown was smooth. The touchdown speed of 59 knots was within the acceptable range, and the rate of descent was smooth at -124 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the pilot managed the aircraft's descent effectively, avoiding any sudden or hard landings.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 20 knots from 287°. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 17 knots. Despite these wind conditions, the pilot maintained good runway alignment during the landing, which is a critical aspect of safe landing procedures.
The total landing distance of 2,544 feet was 46% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the pilot's landing technique was effective in minimizing the aircraft's stopping distance. The runway rollout alignment was also reported as very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and avoided any deviations from the centerline.
Overall, the landing of the C185F Skywagon at KMAE Madera Municipal Airport was a successful one, with the pilot demonstrating good control and technique throughout the approach, landing, and rollout phases.
