Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 152 m above the runway. The 305 m gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,946 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 228 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EDDS Stuttgart Airport, taking approximately 7 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 25, with a takeoff distance of 2,158 meters, which accounted for 71% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 183 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to a higher altitude, it started its enroute climb 1 mile south east of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, a town in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. The climb took 15 minutes, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 691 meters above sea level to 10,672 meters above sea level, covering a distance of 76 nautical miles. This represented an increase of 9,981.3 meters in altitude.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles north of Oberhausen, a town in the state of Bavaria, Germany. This phase lasted for 16 minutes and covered a distance of 125 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started overhead Kirchschlag bei Linz, a town in the state of Oberoesterreich, Austria. The descent took 28 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 10,671 meters above sea level to 520 meters above sea level, covering a distance of 123 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 31 at LZIB M. R. Štefánik Airport was made from the south east, with a heading of 314.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 384.6 meters above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 129 knots and a touchdown rate of -1.8 meters per second. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 1,128 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking approximately 6 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 332 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 76 minutes. The aircraft used 2,336 kilograms of fuel during the flight. The local temperature at the time of departure and landing was 14°C and 17°C, respectively.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LZIB M. R. Štefánik Airport, with a score of 95.6%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south east, heading 314.0° at an altitude of 384.6 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The final approach was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on runway 31 at LZIB M. R. Štefánik Airport, which has a length of 2,946 meters. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude when it reached the runway threshold. The threshold speed of 131 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's speed during the approach.
The touchdown distance of 229 meters was also good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold. The touchdown speed of 129 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -1.8 meters per second was firm, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly.
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft being misaligned by 8.8 meters from the centerline. This may be due to a slight miscalculation by the pilot or a minor deviation in the aircraft's flight path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C. The total landing distance of 1,128 meters was 38% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold. However, the slight deviation in the runway touchdown position may require further attention from the pilot to ensure that future landings are executed more precisely.
