Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 9,559 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 780 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 23L at Manchester Airport (EGCC). The takeoff distance was 4,766 feet, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 165°. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Mobberley in Cheshire East, England. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from 1,230 feet above sea level to 4,788 feet, an increase of 3,558 feet, in just 2 minutes and covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles west of Knutsford in Cheshire East, England. This cruise phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time starting 1 mile southwest of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire East, England. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from 4,932 feet above sea level to 34,365 feet, an increase of 29,433 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 120 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 1 mile south of Silchester in Hampshire, England. This cruise phase lasted for 69 minutes and covered a distance of 495 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting overhead Mas-Saintes-Puelles in Occitanie, France. During this descent, the aircraft descended from 35,037 feet above sea level to 1,286 feet, a decrease of 33,751 feet, in 31 minutes and covering a distance of 120 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24R at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (LEBL) was made from the northeast, heading 245.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 24R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 771 feet and a touchdown speed of 133 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -272 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 75°F and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 179°. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 3,424 feet, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 754 nautical miles and took 132 minutes to complete, using 11,530 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The final approach to runway 24R was executed from the north east, with the aircraft heading 245.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,265 feet above ground level (agl). This approach was marked by a high score of 99.4%, indicating a nearly flawless execution of the landing procedure.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also within the acceptable range at 137 knots. The touchdown distance of 771 feet was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and speed. However, the touchdown speed of 133 knots was slightly higher than the ideal speed, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate of -272 feet per minute (fpm). Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 75°F and a wind speed of 10 knots from 179°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions did not appear to have significantly impacted the landing, as the total landing distance of 3,424 feet was only 36% of the runway length. This suggests that the pilot was able to effectively manage the aircraft's speed and descent to achieve a smooth and controlled landing.
The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and was able to bring the aircraft to a stop in a safe and controlled manner. Overall, this landing was a testament to the pilot's skill and experience, as well as the aircraft's performance and handling characteristics.
