MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,370 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 383 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 34 at SLVR Viru Viru International Airport in Bolivia. The takeoff distance was 882 meters, which is 25% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 159 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 23°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 320°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead SLVR Viru Viru International Airport. The climb took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 98 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 2,291 feet above sea level to 36,834 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,543 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 41 miles south of SL2X El Cerro, and lasted for 46 minutes, covering a distance of 368 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 20 miles south east of SGPC Aeropuerto de Pozo Colorado in Paraguay, and took 21 minutes to descend from 36,759 feet above sea level to 1,453 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,306 feet. The descent covered a distance of 108 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 02 at SGAS Silvio Pettirossi International Airport was made from the south, heading 12.0° at an altitude of 1,146 feet above ground level, and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold.
However, the aircraft was required to perform a go-around at 232 feet above ground level, before making a successful landing on runway 02. The landing was made at a speed of 127 knots, and the touchdown distance was 381 meters, which is a good distance considering the runway length of 3,370 meters. The touchdown rate was firm at -307 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.7 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 25°C, with a wind speed of 0 knots at 330°. The crosswind and headwind components were both zero. The total landing distance was 1,327 meters, which is 39% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 603 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 113 minutes, during which the aircraft used 12,657 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at SGAS Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, with a final approach score of 82.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 12.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,146 feet above ground level (agl).
The initial landing attempt was not ideal, as the aircraft landed with an excessively high threshold speed of 182 knots and an excessively high threshold height of 121 feet agl, which was above the target. However, the second landing attempt was more successful, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 131 knots, which was within the acceptable range.
The touchdown distance of 381 meters was considered good, and the touchdown speed of 127 knots was also within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate of -307 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 25°C and a wind speed of 0 knots at 330°. There was no crosswind or headwind, which made the landing conditions ideal.
The total landing distance of 1,327 meters was 39% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well under control during the landing and rollout phases. Overall, the landing was considered successful, despite some minor issues with the initial approach.
