Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,332 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,332 ft of the 9,834 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,528 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A350-900 taxied from the parking area to runway 07R at HAAB Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The taxi-out required 10 minutes and covered 2 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 07R, using 5,359 ft of runway, which is 48 % of the available length. Liftoff was achieved at 148 kt. Local weather reported a temperature of 80 °F, wind 6 kt from 109°, with a 4 kt crosswind component and a 5 kt headwind component.
Climb began 1 mile east of HAAB, with the airplane ascending from 8,617 ft asl to 39,944 ft asl, a gain of 31,327 ft achieved in 30 minutes while covering 209 nm.
Level cruise was established 6 miles west of Metu, Oromiya Region, Ethiopia, and persisted for 271 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 2,257 nm.
Descent commenced 15 miles north-east of Aboso, Western Region, Ghana, with the aircraft descending from 39,997 ft asl to 1,387 ft asl, a loss of 38,610 ft in 23 minutes over 136 nm.
Final approach to runway 21 at DIAP Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport involved a descent from 1,439 ft agl to 91 ft agl in 108 seconds. The approach was scored on the stabilisation gates.
The Airbus A350-900 landed on runway 21, whose length is 9,834 ft. The threshold speed was recorded at 130 kt. Touchdown occurred 1,098 ft beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 kt and a touchdown rate of minus 70 fpm. Local weather at the time was 77 °F with wind 4 kt from 250°, a 3 kt crosswind and a 3 kt headwind. Total landing distance measured 6,002 ft, representing 61 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a movement that took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 2,611 nm, required 336 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 65,985 lbs of fuel.
The approach to runway 21 at DIAP Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport was assessed as stabilised at the 1 000 ft gate, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits. The aircraft descended from 1 439 ft AGL to 91 ft AGL in 108 seconds, operating in temperature 77 °F, wind 4 kt from 250°, with a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component.
During the threshold and flare phase the threshold height was reported as good and the threshold speed was good at 130 kt. The aircraft flared and touched down 1 098 ft beyond the touchdown zone.
Touchdown occurred at a speed of 123 kt, which was judged good, with an excellent vertical rate of minus 70 fpm and very good runway-touchdown alignment.
Rollout used a total landing distance of 6 002 ft, representing 61 % of the 9 834 ft runway, and the rollout alignment was very good.
To convert the overshoot of the touchdown point into a more optimal aim-point landing, a slightly earlier flare should be practiced to achieve touchdown nearer the 1 000 ft (300 m) aim point while preserving the current speed and alignment performance.
