Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,392 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,347 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) took approximately 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then began its departure roll on runway 36R, utilizing 2,495 feet, or 29% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 143 knots. Local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 62°F, with a gentle 2-knot headwind from a direction of 270°.
Following a smooth takeoff, the aircraft initiated its enroute climb approximately 1 mile northeast of KCLT, rising from an initial altitude of 2,017 feet above sea level to 11,010 feet in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles. The climb rate of 1,788 feet per minute was consistent with the aircraft's performance capabilities. The enroute level cruise phase commenced 3 miles east of Light Oak, North Carolina, and lasted for 24 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 158 nautical miles. The subsequent descent phase, initiated 3 miles west of Athens, Tennessee, saw the aircraft descend from 11,000 feet to 3,788 feet in 7 minutes, covering 33 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 20 at Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (KCHA) was conducted from the north, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 197.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,248 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly below the target value of 110 knots, at 109 knots. The touchdown distance of 1,351 feet was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 104 knots was also satisfactory. The total landing distance of 2,935 feet, or 40% of the runway, was within the expected range. Following a smooth rollout, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in less than 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance of 247 nautical miles was achieved in 47 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 6,443 pounds.
The aircraft, C750, successfully completed a final approach to runway 20 at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) from the north. The approach was characterized by good quality, with the aircraft maintaining a steady heading of 197.0° at 4 nm and 1,248 ft above ground level. The aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold speed that was slightly below the target, at 109 kt, but still within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft demonstrated good control, with a touchdown distance of 1,351 ft and a touchdown speed of 104 kt. However, the touchdown rate of -212 fpm was slightly below the optimal rate, indicating a slightly longer deceleration phase. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59°F and a light headwind of 1 kt, contributed to a smooth and controlled touchdown.
The aircraft's rollout was equally impressive, with perfect alignment on the runway centerline. The total landing distance of 2,935 ft, which accounted for 40% of the runway length, was well within the acceptable limits. Overall, the landing was deemed a success, with a score of 99.8% reflecting the high level of proficiency demonstrated by the pilot.
