Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,168 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,168 ft of the 8,984 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,116 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an Airbus A319, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KPNS Pensacola International Airport. This process took approximately 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 17, with the aircraft taking off and covering a distance of 3,814 feet, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 142 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 76°F and winds of 4 knots at 150°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 3 knots. After departing from KPNS, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,132 feet above sea level to 33,145 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,013 feet in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 8 miles north of Goshen, Alabama, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 28 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 5 miles northwest of 07A Franklin Union Springs, Alabama. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 33,139 feet above sea level to 2,223 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,916 feet in 23 minutes and covering a distance of 112 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, KATL Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it began its final approach to runway 27L from the east, heading 270.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,183 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 27L, which had a length of 8,984 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 133 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 1,120 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 128 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -264 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect after the landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 70°F and winds of 2 knots at 110°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 1 knot.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking approximately 4 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 245 nautical miles, and the flight took 52 minutes. The aircraft used 4,109 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed on runway 27L at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) with a score of 98.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,183 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height.
The threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 132 kt, coming in at 133 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 1,120 ft was within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 128 kt was a bit faster than desired, but the touchdown rate of -264 fpm was fair. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway during touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 70°F and a wind speed of 2 kt from 110°. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 1 kt each. The total landing distance of 4,898 ft was 55% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight.
During the rollout, the aircraft maintained perfect alignment with the runway, indicating that the pilots had excellent control over the aircraft's speed and direction. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score of 98.8%.
