Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,819 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,819 m of the 3,403 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 528 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport took approximately 8 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Boeing 737-800 then began its departure roll on runway 24L, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 156 knots. The takeoff distance of 1,508 meters accounted for 57% of the available runway length. Local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 11°C, with a light wind of 5 knots from a direction of 330°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 34,250 feet above sea level in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles. The climb phase was characterized by a significant increase in altitude, with a total ascent of 33,177 feet. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 107 minutes and covered a distance of 857 nautical miles. The cruise phase was conducted at a steady altitude, allowing the aircraft to maintain a consistent airspeed and fuel efficiency. The enroute descent phase began approximately 6 miles south of Chalandritsa, Greece, and lasted for 22 minutes, during which the aircraft descended from 34,750 feet to 1,566 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 03R at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was conducted from the south west, with the aircraft aligning with the runway at a height of 1,274 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the threshold. The landing was executed with a threshold speed of 136 knots, and the touchdown point was located 108 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 130 knots was slightly above the recommended value, but the touchdown rate of -80 feet per minute was excellent. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 5 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,093 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 163 minutes and a fuel consumption of 6,596 kilograms.
The Boeing 737-800 touched down on runway 03R at LGAV Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport with a threshold speed of 136 kt, meeting the required standards. The approach quality was good, with a stable and controlled descent from 1,274 ft agl at 4 nm from the runway. The aircraft maintained a heading of 37.0°, aligning with the runway centerline.
The touchdown point was 108 m beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight over-run. However, the touchdown speed of 130 kt was a little fast, exceeding the recommended threshold speed. The touchdown rate of -80 fpm was excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled touchdown. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 m from the centerline, but this was corrected during the rollout phase.
The total landing distance of 1,735 m was 51% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining a straight course along the centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 6 °C and a wind speed of 5 kt at 280°, contributed to a stable and controlled landing. Overall, the landing was scored 99.0%, reflecting a high level of proficiency and adherence to standard operating procedures.
