Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,973 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 588 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, a Kodiak 100, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at John F Kennedy Memorial Airport (KASX). This process took approximately 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 13, with a takeoff distance of 204 meters, which accounted for 19% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 74 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile southeast of KASX, reaching an altitude of 3,669 feet above sea level from an initial altitude of 1,809 feet. This climb of 1,860 feet was achieved in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The enroute climb phase was followed by an 8-minute level cruise, which covered a distance of 23 nautical miles, starting 6 miles southeast of Ashland, Wisconsin.
The final approach to runway 09 at Gogebic Iron County Airport (KIWD) was initiated from the west, with the aircraft heading 87.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,473 feet above ground level, and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 72 knots. The touchdown point was 155 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 62 knots and a smooth touchdown rate of -118 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 4.4 meters. The total landing distance was 871 meters, accounting for 44% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking approximately 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 33 nautical miles, taking 17 minutes, and the aircraft used 41 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft in question is a Kodiak 100, which successfully landed at KIWD Gogebic Iron County Airport. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 87.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,473 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was satisfactory, with a score of 96.2%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 1,973 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a safe altitude before touchdown. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 72 knots, which may indicate a slight deviation from the optimal approach speed.
The touchdown point was located 155 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance. The touchdown speed of 62 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -118 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.4 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments to the approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C. The total landing distance of 871 meters was 44% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain a stable and controlled roll-out after touchdown.
Overall, the landing performance of the Kodiak 100 was satisfactory, with a score of 96.2%. While there were some minor deviations from the optimal approach and touchdown parameters, the aircraft was able to maintain a safe and controlled descent, and the runway rollout was smooth and aligned.
