Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,435 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,124 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by an Airbus A321 aircraft, which departed from Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (KMSP) on runway 30R. The taxiing process from the parking area to the runway took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then took off, reaching a liftoff speed of 150 knots and covering a takeoff distance of 1,127 meters, which was 46% of the runway length.
During the initial climb, the aircraft ascended from 1,841 feet above sea level to 31,115 feet, an increase of 29,274 feet, in 18 minutes while covering a distance of 97 nautical miles. The climb started over KMSP and continued until the aircraft reached cruising altitude. The enroute level cruise phase began 4 miles north of MN71 Ziermann Airport and lasted for 48 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 1,024 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 31,837 feet above sea level to 1,338 feet, a decrease of 30,500 feet, in 20 minutes while covering a distance of 116 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 10L at Portland International Airport (KPDX) was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 119.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,303 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 10L was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 135 knots and a rate of -186 feet per minute. However, the touchdown point was 707 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 24.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 0 knots.
The total flight distance was 1,244 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 91 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 9,784 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was completed successfully, with the aircraft landing safely on the designated runway.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 10L at KPDX Portland International Airport, achieving an overall score of 81.9%. The final approach was initiated from the northwest, heading 119.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,303 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's performance during the landing was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and speed. The threshold speed was recorded at 143 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown point was located 707 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 135 knots, which is also within the acceptable range. Furthermore, the touchdown rate was good at -186 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
However, there was a notable deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft significantly misaligned by 24.2 meters from the centerline. This discrepancy may be attributed to factors such as wind, pilot error, or a combination of both. Fortunately, the landing was still successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop safely.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 0 knots from 209°. There was no crosswind or headwind present, which contributed to a smoother landing. Overall, the landing was a success, despite the minor deviation from the centerline.
