Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: six checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,980 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,335 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) took approximately 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The departure roll commenced on runway 15, with the aircraft taking off in a 2,744-foot distance, representing 56% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 143 knots. Local weather conditions at the time of departure included a temperature of 64°F, with a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
The enroute climb phase began approximately 1 mile southeast of KCHA, with the aircraft ascending from an initial altitude of 2,002 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 24,989 feet, a vertical increase of 22,987 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 50 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase commenced 7 miles west of TN09 Fergusons Flying Circus Airport, lasting 38 minutes and covering 316 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase started 1 mile northwest of Saint Clairsville, Ohio, with the aircraft descending from 24,861 feet to 2,893 feet, a vertical decrease of 21,967 feet in 12 minutes, covering 71 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 32 at KYNG Youngstown Warren Regional Airport was conducted from the southeast, with the aircraft aligning with the runway at 4 nautical miles and 1,300 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 32 at KYNG Youngstown Warren Regional Airport was executed with a touchdown distance of 1,331 feet, representing 33% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was slightly above the recommended threshold speed of 117 knots, at 108 knots, while the touchdown rate was fair at -260 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 46 feet from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 49 feet from the centerline. Taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 450 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 69 minutes and a fuel consumption of 13 pounds.
The aircraft, C750, successfully executed a final approach to runway 32 at KYNG Youngstown Warren Regional Airport from the south east, aligning with the runway heading of 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,300 feet above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and threshold speed of 117 knots, indicating a well-controlled descent.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown distance of 1,331 feet was within acceptable limits, but the touchdown speed of 108 knots was slightly above the optimal range. The touchdown rate of -260 feet per minute was fair, suggesting a moderate deceleration. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 46 feet from the centreline, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed.
The aircraft's rollout phase was characterized by a total landing distance of 2,933 feet, accounting for 33% of the runway length. Although the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 49 feet from the centreline, the overall performance was satisfactory, earning the aircraft a score of 93.1%. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 59°F and a light headwind of 1 kt, contributed to a smooth and controlled landing.
