Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,050 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 598 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a CRJ900, then departed from runway 31L at John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK). The takeoff distance was 1,408 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 158 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 6°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 289°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 6 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile southeast of Howard Beach, New York, and ascended from an altitude of 1,015 feet above sea level to 32,384 feet above sea level, an increase of 31,369 feet, in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 78 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead West Norriton, Pennsylvania, and lasted for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 309 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 7 miles north of Hometown, West Virginia, and descended from 32,447 feet above sea level to 2,202 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,246 feet, in 17 minutes and covering a distance of 134 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36R at Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport (KCVG) was made from the south, heading 360°, at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,302 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 36R, which had a length of 3,050 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 136 knots.
The touchdown point was 179 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 123 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was also good at -160 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 4°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 330°, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,346 meters, which was 44% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 529 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 55 minutes. The aircraft used 3,350 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The CRJ900 aircraft successfully landed at KCVG Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport, achieving a score of 95.6%. The final approach was conducted from the south, heading 360.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,302 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 36R, which has a length of 3,050 meters.
The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. The touchdown point was 179 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 123 knots was within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -160 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, indicating a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 4°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots from 330°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft performed well, with a total landing distance of 1,346 meters, which is 44% of the runway length.
One minor issue was noted during the landing, with the runway touchdown position being slightly misaligned by 7.1 meters from the centerline. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft performed well in the challenging weather conditions.
