Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,763 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,763 m of the 2,642 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 620 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Newcastle Airport, the Boeing 777-300 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. As it reached the runway threshold, the aircraft initiated its departure roll on runway 25, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 156 knots. The takeoff distance of 796 meters accounted for 36% of the runway length, with a local temperature of 14°C and a gentle headwind of 6 knots contributing to the smooth departure.
As the aircraft climbed away from Newcastle, it began its enroute climb 1 mile east of Darras Hall, rising from 1,279 feet above sea level to 7,667 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The climb continued in stages, with the aircraft reaching a cruise altitude of 36,995 feet above sea level 2 miles north of Wolsingham, a gain of 28,980 feet in 14 minutes and covering 104 nautical miles. The subsequent level cruise phase, which lasted 68 minutes and covered 581 nautical miles, took the aircraft over Congleton in Cheshire East, England. As the aircraft began its descent over Flaviac in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France, it started its final approach to runway 04L at Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, a 24-minute descent from 36,999 feet to 1,300 feet above sea level, covering 147 nautical miles.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 04L at Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, with a touchdown point 205 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 140 knots was slightly above the recommended threshold speed, but the touchdown rate of -181 feet per minute was satisfactory. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also satisfactory. The total landing distance of 1,684 meters accounted for 64% of the runway length. After taxiing to the parking area, the aircraft had completed a total flight distance of 857 nautical miles, using 13,835 kilograms of fuel and taking 121 minutes to complete the journey.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 04L at LFMN Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport with a satisfactory approach quality, demonstrating good control and precision throughout the descent. The aircraft descended from 1,278 feet above ground level (agl) at a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway, aligning with the runway heading of 45.0 degrees. The threshold height was well-managed, allowing for a smooth transition to the runway.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the recommended threshold speed of 146 knots, registering at 140 knots. However, the touchdown rate of -181 feet per minute (fpm) was within acceptable limits. The touchdown point was located 205 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating precise control during the final stages of the approach. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a gentle tailwind of 1 knot, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing.
The total landing distance of 1,684 meters was 64% of the runway length, indicating a satisfactory rollout performance. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the crew's ability to maintain control and stability during the critical phases of the landing. Overall, the landing was scored 97.6%, reflecting a high level of proficiency and adherence to standard operating procedures.
