Fixing the bounce
Fast at the threshold, normal flare, and the runway seems to refuse the aircraft. The instinctive fix - pushing it on - causes the next one. A fast aircraft forced onto the runway touches nosewheel-first or nearly so. The tell is a touchdown that feels soft followed by a bounce that steepens. Pilots fix the bounce recovery; the cause was the 10 knots at the threshold.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 671 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 49 m short of the threshold. The 0.19 G arrival is the firm side of smooth.
The rest of the report
Departure from EHAL Ameland Airport Ballum commenced with a smooth roll down runway 27, where the aircraft, ICP Savannah S I-C019, accelerated to liftoff speed of 34 kt within a takeoff distance of 48 meters, representing 7% of the available runway. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 15 °C, with a gentle headwind of 1 kt at 269°. Following a brief enroute level cruise phase, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles, the aircraft transitioned into an enroute climb phase, initiated 1 mile south west of Nes. The climb from 425 ft above sea level to 1,499 ft asl, an increase of 1,075 ft, was achieved within 3 minutes and spanned 4 nautical miles.
The climb phase was followed by a final approach to runway 27 at EHAL Ameland Airport Ballum, initiated from the east at a heading of 253.0°, 1 nautical mile from the runway threshold and at an altitude of 1,485 ft above ground level. The touchdown was executed before the threshold, with a speed of 34 kt, resulting in an excellent touchdown rate of -89 fpm. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 31.6 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was significantly misaligned by 31.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing featured a temperature of 20 °C, with a gentle headwind of 2 kt at 233°.
The taxiing phase to the parking area from the runway took 11 minutes and covered 13 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 24 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 20 minutes, and the aircraft utilized 0 kg of fuel throughout the flight. The performance of the ICP Savannah S I-C019 during this flight demonstrated its capabilities in various phases of flight, including takeoff, climb, and landing.
The final approach to runway 27 at EHAL Ameland Airport Ballum was initiated from the east, heading 253.0° at 1 nm and 1,485 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a stable and controlled descent. The aircraft touched down before the threshold, indicating a slightly aggressive approach. The touchdown speed of 34 kt was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -89 fpm was excellent, demonstrating good control and precision.
However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 31.6 meters from the centreline, indicating a deviation from the intended path. This misalignment was also evident during the rollout phase, where the aircraft was significantly misaligned by 31.4 meters from the centreline. The total landing distance of 63 meters was 9% of the runway, which is within the acceptable range. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind of 2 kt at 233°, were relatively calm, with a slight headwind component.
The overall performance of the landing was satisfactory, with a score of 64.5%. While the approach and touchdown were well-executed, the significant misalignment during the rollout phase detracted from the overall score. The pilot's ability to maintain control and precision during the approach and touchdown was evident, but the deviation from the centreline during the rollout phase requires attention and improvement.
