Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,525 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,525 ft of the 8,690 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,330 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 31C at KMDW Chicago Midway International Airport. The takeoff distance was 3,869 feet, which accounted for 72% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 149 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 49°F and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 326°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 6 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile east of Summit, Illinois. The climb took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 111 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,673 feet above sea level to 38,899 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles west of Crawfordsville, Indiana. This phase lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 280 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 6 miles north of Dante, Virginia. The descent took 22 minutes and covered a distance of 125 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 39,037 feet to 2,011 feet.
The final approach to runway 18L at KCLT Charlotte Douglas International Airport was made from the north, with the aircraft heading 178.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,270 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 18L, which had a length of 8,690 feet. The threshold height at 60 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 143 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,952 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 124 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -154 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 14 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 73°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 285°, resulting in a crosswind of 9 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,247 feet, which accounted for 60% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 8 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 525 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 89 minutes. The aircraft used 6,873 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) on runway 18L. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 178.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,270 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's performance during the landing was evaluated, and it scored 85.5%.
The aircraft's approach to the runway was slightly above the target threshold height at 60 feet agl. However, the threshold speed was well above the target at 143 knots, indicating that the aircraft was descending at a faster rate than expected. The touchdown point was 1,952 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may have been due to the aircraft's excessive speed at touchdown. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was also slightly faster than the target, but the touchdown rate of -154 feet per minute (fpm) was considered good.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 14 feet, which may have been due to the crosswind or tailwind conditions. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 73°F and winds of 9 knots from 285°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the tailwind component was 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 5,247 feet was 60% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some areas for improvement, such as reducing the touchdown speed and improving the alignment with the runway centerline.
