Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 840 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 840 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 355 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a TBM 850, then departed from runway 24 at ENSG Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen. The takeoff distance was 514 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 102 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 14 knots from a direction of 260 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 13 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile southwest of ENSG Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen, and ascended from an altitude of 2,528 feet above sea level to 9,260 feet above sea level, an increase of 6,732 feet, in just 4 minutes and covering 11 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 3 miles west of Hermansverk and lasted for 16 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 42 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 4 miles southwest of ENSD Sandane Airport, Anda, and involved a descent from 9,399 feet above sea level to 264 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,135 feet, in 10 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at ENSD Sandane Airport, Anda, was made from the west, with a heading of 87.0 degrees at an altitude of 89 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 08 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 353 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 76 knots was slightly fast, and the touchdown rate of -175 feet per minute was good. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 210 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a tailwind of 6 knots. The total landing distance was 600 meters, which accounted for 71% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 59 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 35 minutes. The aircraft used 99 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The TBM 850 aircraft successfully landed at ENSD Sandane Airport, Anda, with a score of 96.7%. The final approach was made from the west, heading 87.0° at 0 nm and 89 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 08, which has a length of 840 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was too high at 87 kt, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to reduce the speed further before touchdown. The touchdown distance of 353 meters was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to land within the designated landing area.
The touchdown speed of 76 kt was fast, which may have resulted in a slightly longer rollout distance. The touchdown rate of -175 fpm was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly and without excessive deceleration. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the centerline of the runway at touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C and winds of 11 kt from 210°. The crosswind component was 9 kt, while the tailwind component was 6 kt. These conditions may have affected the aircraft's performance during the landing.
The total landing distance of 600 meters was 71% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to land within a reasonable distance from the threshold. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment with the centerline of the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and maintaining its alignment with the runway centerline. However, there were some areas for improvement, including reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed.
