Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,679 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,679 m of the 2,753 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 522 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 34 at LWSK Skopje International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,667 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 12°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 15°.
The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead the location of Marino (Ilinden, Macedonia). The climb took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 38 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,820 feet above sea level to 16,010 feet above sea level, an increase of 14,189 feet. The enroute level cruise started 2 miles east of Korito (Gostivar, Macedonia) and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 6 miles southwest of Peshkopi (Qarku i Dibres, Albania) and took 10 minutes to complete, covering a distance of 47 nautical miles. During this period, the aircraft descended from an altitude of 16,007 feet above sea level to 1,616 feet above sea level, a decrease of 14,391 feet. The final approach to runway 35 at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa was made from the south, heading 354.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,485 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 35 was successful, with the touchdown point being 105 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 145 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -190 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 11°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at a direction of 310°.
The total landing distance was 1,597 meters, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 128 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 32 minutes. The aircraft used 1,750 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa, achieving a high score of 99.1%. The final approach to runway 35 was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 354.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,485 feet above ground level.
The landing was executed with good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 146 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 145 knots was slightly above the optimal range, indicating that the pilots may have been able to reduce the speed further to achieve a smoother touchdown. The touchdown rate of -190 feet per minute was considered good, indicating a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilots maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 11°C and a light wind of 2 knots from 310°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, and the headwind component was also 1 knot, which did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,597 meters was 58% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and avoided any deviations from the centerline.
Overall, the landing was executed with high precision and control, and the pilots demonstrated excellent skills in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown. The high score of 99.1% reflects the quality of the landing and the pilots' ability to manage the aircraft's performance in a variety of conditions.
