Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,719 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,719 m of the 2,944 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 505 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 23 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,544 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 165 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 9°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at a direction of 120°. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a tailwind of 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of Hamburg-Nord, and climbed from an altitude of 1,100 feet above sea level to 36,812 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,712 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 127 nautical miles.
After reaching the cruising altitude, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 2 miles northeast of Vejle, Denmark, and lasted for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 194 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 5 miles northwest of Kil, Norway, and descended from 35,908 feet above sea level to 5,782 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,126 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 73 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 4 miles north of Skui, Norway, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 2 miles east of Skui, Norway, and descended from 5,780 feet above sea level to 1,957 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,823 feet in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 20 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01R at ENGM Oslo Airport, Gardermoen was made from the south, heading 16.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,274 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 01R, which has a length of 2,944 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 134 knots.
The touchdown point was 74 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 129 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -277 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 4°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at a direction of 170°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,623 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 427 nautical miles, taking 78 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,672 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at ENGM Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, with a score of 97.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 16.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 01R, which has a length of 2,944 meters.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 134 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the approach. However, the touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to a slightly higher touchdown rate of -277 feet per minute (fpm).
The touchdown point was 74 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 5.1 meters from the centerline, but this did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 4°C and winds of 4 knots at 170°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,623 meters was 55% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and judgment in managing the aircraft's approach and touchdown.
