Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,490 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,490 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 381 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 36 at SLAP Apolo Airport. The aircraft, a TBM 850, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 95 knots. The takeoff distance was 349 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 269 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 3 miles north of SLAP Apolo Airport. The climb started at an altitude of 5,974 feet above sea level and continued to 9,315 feet, an increase of 3,341 feet in just 3 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 8 nautical miles. The climb was followed by a level cruise, which began 8 miles northeast of the airport and lasted for 7 minutes. The cruise phase covered a distance of 27 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent 19 miles west of Rurrenabaque Airport. The descent started at an altitude of 9,223 feet and continued to 1,918 feet, a decrease of 7,305 feet in 7 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 18 nautical miles during this phase. The final approach to runway 14 at SLRU Rurenabaque Airport was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 136.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,220 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 14 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 77 knots. The touchdown distance was 379 meters, which was considered good. However, the touchdown speed was slightly fast, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also excellent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 704 meters, which accounted for 47% of the runway length. The aircraft used a total of 56 kilograms of fuel during the flight, which covered a distance of 61 nautical miles and took 23 minutes to complete.
The TBM 850 aircraft successfully landed at SLRU Rurenabaque Airport, achieving a score of 95.2%. The final approach was conducted from the north-west, heading 136.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,220 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on runway 14, which has a length of 1,490 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was too high at 86 knots, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to reduce the speed further before touchdown. The touchdown distance was good at 379 meters, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
The touchdown speed of 77 knots was reported as fast, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to reduce the speed further before touchdown. The touchdown rate was smooth at -112 feet per minute (fpm), indicating that the aircraft touched down with minimal impact. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were reported as follows: temperature 15°C, wind 1 knot at 270°, crosswind 1 knot, and tailwind 1 knot. These conditions were relatively calm, with minimal wind affecting the aircraft's approach and landing.
The total landing distance was 704 meters, which is 47% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a good score. However, there were some areas for improvement, including reducing the threshold speed and touchdown speed.
