Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,086 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,550 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Vision Jet taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. Once on the runway, the aircraft departed from runway 23 at CNZ3 Chatham-Kent Airport, with a takeoff distance of 991 feet, which accounted for 20% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 90 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 90°F and a wind speed of 18 knots at 210°.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb overhead CYCK Chatham Kent Airport, Chatham-Kent (Ontario, Canada), rising from an altitude of 1,346 feet above sea level to 5,672 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,326 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 7 miles southwest of Chatham (Ontario, Canada) and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 5 miles east of CRML Stoney Point (Le Cunff) Airport, Stoney Point (Ontario, Canada), where the aircraft descended from 5,667 feet above sea level to 1,714 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,953 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles. Another enroute level cruise then began 5 miles southeast of Grosse Pointe (Michigan, United States) and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 33 at KDET Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport was made from the southeast, heading 324.0° at 3 nautical miles and 808 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 33 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,542 feet, which was good, and a touchdown speed of 68 knots, also within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was good at -157 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 91°F and a wind speed of 10 knots at 255°. The crosswind was 9 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 2,001 feet, which accounted for 39% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The total flight distance was 42 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 17 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 117 pounds.
The Vision Jet has successfully landed at KDET Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 95.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southeast, heading 324.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 808 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the Vision Jet touched down on runway 33, which has a length of 5,086 feet. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed, however, was above the target speed, coming in at 83 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 1,542 feet, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 68 knots.
The touchdown rate of -157 feet per minute (fpm) was also reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down smoothly and safely upon touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it touched down.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were hot, with a temperature of 91°F, and a moderate wind blowing at 10 knots from 255°. The crosswind component was 9 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. Despite these conditions, the Vision Jet was able to land safely and efficiently.
The total landing distance was 2,001 feet, which is 39% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down quickly and safely upon touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also reported as very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it rolled out after touchdown. Overall, the Vision Jet's landing at KDET Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport was a success, with the aircraft performing well in a variety of challenging conditions.
