Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,474 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 583 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 26 at the 05C Griffith-Merrillville airport. The takeoff distance was 1,201 feet, which accounted for 32% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 138 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°. There was no crosswind, but a headwind of 1 knot was present. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead Griffith, Indiana, and ascended from an altitude of 1,649 feet above sea level to 4,474 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,825 feet, in just 1 minute and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise phase started overhead Dyer, Indiana, and lasted for 7 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 27 nautical miles. The descent phase began 1 mile southwest of Woodridge, Illinois, and involved a decrease in altitude from 4,559 feet above sea level to 2,552 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,008 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 7 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 2 miles southwest of Warrenville, Illinois, and lasting for 3 minutes, during which it covered a distance of 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 27 at the KARR Aurora Municipal Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 266.0° at an altitude of 1,261 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 27 was successful, with the touchdown distance being 579 feet, which was good. The touchdown speed was 101 knots, which was fast, and the touchdown rate was fair at -254 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was also very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°, with no crosswind and a headwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 1,798 feet, which accounted for 28% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 51 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 18 minutes. The aircraft used 2,913 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KARR Aurora Municipal Airport, achieving a score of 97.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 266.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,261 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, aligning the aircraft with the runway threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on runway 27, which has a length of 6,474 feet. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was above the target speed of 105 kt. The touchdown distance of 579 feet was within acceptable limits, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed of 101 kt was slightly faster than desired, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -254 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to achieve a more controlled touchdown. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 1 kt from 270°. The crosswind component was negligible, and the headwind component was minimal at 1 kt. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 1,798 feet was 28% of the runway length, which is within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated good skills and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
