Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,034 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 497 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A321 departed from EDDV Hannover Airport, runway 09R, after a 7-minute taxiing period from the parking to the runway, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The takeoff distance used 1,038 meters, which is 44% of the runway, and the liftoff speed of 146 knots was achieved.
As the aircraft lifted off, it climbed to an enroute altitude, starting over Langenhagen in Germany. The climb from 1,172 feet above sea level to 37,331 feet in 36,159 feet over 24 minutes covered a distance of 161 nautical miles. Subsequently, the aircraft transitioned to an enroute cruise phase, starting approximately 1 mile west of Hoogland in the Netherlands. During the 116-minute cruise, which covered 782 nautical miles, the aircraft reached its cruising altitude, maintaining a steady speed and altitude.
After the cruise phase, the aircraft began its descent at approximately 1 mile south-west of Chantada in Spain. The descent from 38,285 feet above sea level to 1,318 feet in 19 minutes covered a distance of 87 nautical miles, bringing the aircraft closer to its destination, LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. The final approach to runway 17, coming from the north with a heading of 169.0°, was made at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,125 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 17 was successfully accomplished, despite some variations from the desired performance parameters. The threshold height above the target height and the threshold speed above the target speed were noted. The touchdown point was 76 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 135 knots. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -86 feet per minute was excellent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment also achieved the desired outcome.
Post-landing, the aircraft was taxiied to the parking in 3 minutes and less than 1 nautical mile, marking the end of the flight. Over the entire flight, which covered a total distance of 1,090 nautical miles, the aircraft used 7,996 kilograms of fuel and completed the journey in 170 minutes.
The Airbus A321 achieved a high score of 95.7% on its landing at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. The aircraft began its final approach to runway 17, heading in a 169.0° direction from a distance of 4 nautical miles and at an altitude of 1,125 feet above ground level.
The landing was completed with precision, as the aircraft aligned perfectly with the runway during touchdown. The pilots managed to bring the aircraft in with a speed of 143 knots, which was significantly higher than the target threshold speed. This was likely an intentional decision to ensure a safe and controlled landing.
The touchdown point was located 76 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. Although the touchdown speed of 135 knots was slightly faster than desired, the aircraft's descent rate was excellent, with a negative rate of -86 feet per minute. This demonstrated the pilots' ability to control the aircraft's altitude and maintain a stable descent.
The local weather conditions on the day of the landing included a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 24 knots at a direction of 160°. This was largely advantageous, as the wind helped to offset the aircraft's crosswind component, which was only 4 knots. As a result, the aircraft experienced a significant headwind, which further contributed to the safe and controlled nature of the landing.
The total landing distance required by the aircraft was 1,244 meters, accounting for 41% of the available runway length. This was a relatively short distance, indicating that the pilots' initial landing attempt was successful. Furthermore, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilots' continued attention to safety and control after touchdown.
Overall, the landing of the Airbus A321 at LPPR Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport was a highly successful operation, showcasing the pilots' expertise and precision. The high score achieved by the aircraft reflects the professionalism and skill of the pilots involved.
