Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: gear still up and off the runway's 3° glideslope.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,494 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 842 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
A domestic flight in a 72-seater aircraft, the ATR 72, departed from the Graz Airport (LOWG) runway 16C. The aircraft's taxiing from the parking bay to the runway took only 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. With a takeoff speed of 125 kt, the flight lifted off just 1,319 meters or 48% into the 2,740-meter runway, which was sufficient for the aircraft.
After takeoff, the climb began, starting from a height of 2,098 feet above sea level and gradually ascending to 10,886 feet above sea level, a considerable increase of 8,788 feet within an 8-minute span and covering 11 nautical miles. Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered an enroute level cruise, lasting 10 minutes over 39 nautical miles, and took place 1 mile northwest of Eggersdorf bei Graz.
As the aircraft approached the destination, it initiated the descent process, starting 1 mile southeast of Neunkirchen. In 13 minutes, the aircraft decreased its altitude by 9,907 feet, from 10,978 feet above sea level to 1,071 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles.
Upon approaching Vienna International Airport, the aircraft started its final approach from the southeast, heading towards runway 29, and was 1 nautical mile and 484 feet above ground level. With a temperature of 20 °C, a wind speed of 4 kt (7 km/h), and a crosswind component of 4 kt, the aircraft prepared for landing.
Landing on runway 29, which was 3,494 meters long, resulted in a touchdown 384 meters beyond the touchdown zone. However, the touchdown speed was a good 101 kt, but the touchdown rate was notably hard at -562 feet per minute. The landing performance was further complicated by the fact that the touchdown position on the runway was 9.8 meters off the centerline.
Once on the ground, taxiing to the parking bay took just 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The flight distance totaled 86 nautical miles and took around 42 minutes, with the aircraft using a total of 345 kg of fuel.
The landing of Aircraft ATR 72 at LOWW Vienna International Airport was evaluated at 76.7%. The approach from the southeast direction was executed at a heading of 294.0°, 1 nautical mile away from the runway at an altitude of 484 feet above ground level.
The approach touched down on runway 29, which is 3,494 meters long. However, the aircraft's threshold height was excessively above the target at 135 feet above ground level. In comparison, the threshold speed was slightly above target at 117 knots. Upon touching down, the aircraft was going at a speed of 101 knots, which is considered good. Nevertheless, the landing rate was extremely hard, at -562 feet per minute, indicating a possible rough touch down.
Additionally, it was observed that the runway touchdown position was misaligned by approximately 9.8 meters from the centerline of the runway, indicating that the aircraft might not have been perfectly aligned during the landing. The local weather conditions on the day of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 98°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 4 knots, which may have slightly affected the aircraft's approach and touchdown.
After touching down, the aircraft continued to roll along the runway, covering a total distance of 1,377 meters, which is approximately 39% of the runway length. Although the rollout of the aircraft was slightly misaligned by 12.4 meters from the centerline, it successfully came to a stop after the landing. Overall, the landing performance of the ATR 72 can be evaluated as satisfactory despite some room for improvement in terms of alignment and landing rate.
