Keep the approach speed on target
Next time
Add power on short final to hold 129 kt at the threshold rather than letting speed decay.
What happened: You crossed the threshold at 68 kt against a target of 129 kt, below reference speed.
Watch for: Airspeed indicator, hold 129 kt down to the threshold.
Departure
Hold the nose until reaching 85 kt before rotating.
What happened: Rotation began at 80 kt, 5 kt before the 85 kt target.
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,490 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 408 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Gabriel 420 Racing departed EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde from runway 23. The takeoff roll measured 345 m, which is 14 % of the runway length, and the aircraft became airborne at a liftoff speed of 80 kt. Reported weather conditions were temperature 11 °C, wind 2 kt from 169°, with a 1 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
During the left-hand pattern the aircraft entered the circuit from runway 23, covering less than 1 nm in 47 seconds. The subsequent left-hand crosswind leg was also less than 1 nm and lasted 12 seconds. The downwind turn spanned 1 nm with an angle to the runway of 76.2°, followed by a downwind leg of 2 nm completed in 60 seconds. The base turn covered 1 nm at an angle of 49.3°, after which the base leg was less than 1 nm and took 21 seconds. The final turn was less than 1 nm and required 20 seconds. The final approach to runway 23 was flown from the north-east on a heading of 231.0°, at 0 nm distance and 193 ft AGL, under the same temperature 11 °C and wind 2 kt from 169° (1 kt cross-wind, 1 kt head-wind).
Landing was executed on runway 23, whose length is 2,493 m. The threshold speed was 69 kt. Touchdown occurred 411 m down the runway at a speed of 48 kt, with a descent rate of minus 99 fpm and perfect runway-touchdown alignment. The total landing distance recorded was 595 m, representing 24 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was also perfect.
In total the flight covered 5 nm, required 7 minutes, and consumed 2 kg of fuel.
Gabriel 420 Racing achieved a final approach to runway 23 at EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde from the north-east, maintaining a heading of 231.0° at 0 nm and 193 ft AGL. Local weather was 11 °C with wind 2 kt from 169°, including a 1 kt crosswind and a 1 kt headwind. The aircraft’s score was 99.3 %.
The threshold height was reported as good and the threshold speed was 69 kt as the aircraft entered the flare.
Touchdown occurred 411 m down the runway at a speed of 48 kt, with a touchdown rate of minus 99 fpm and runway touchdown alignment described as perfect.
The total landing distance was 595 m, representing 24 % of the 2,493 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was perfect.
Maintain the current touchdown point and rate while continuing to monitor the approach to keep the excellent alignment and speed control demonstrated in this high-scoring landing.
