Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,360 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,360 ft of the 11,990 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,079 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A319, then departed from runway 18L at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. The takeoff distance was 7,036 feet, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 65°F and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 230°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile southwest of KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, rising from an altitude of 1,616 feet above sea level to 35,709 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 102 nautical miles, took 18 minutes.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 9 miles northwest of KONY Olney Municipal Airport. This phase lasted for 49 minutes and covered a distance of 354 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 13 miles north of Las Animas, Colorado, and descended from 35,706 feet above sea level to 6,493 feet above sea level. This descent, which covered a distance of 114 nautical miles, took 22 minutes.
The final approach to runway 26 at KDEN Denver International Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 271.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,126 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 26, which had a length of 11,990 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 138 knots.
The touchdown point was 991 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 137 knots, which was slightly faster than desired. The touchdown rate was firm at -319 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 14 feet. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 43°F and a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 230°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 7,372 feet, which accounted for 61% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 580 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 1 hour and 1 minute. The aircraft used a total of 8,414 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at KDEN Denver International Airport, achieving a score of 96.0%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 271.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,126 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 26, which has a length of 11,990 feet.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down slightly beyond the touchdown zone, at a point 991 feet from the threshold. The touchdown speed was recorded at 137 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was firm, at -319 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline, by 14 feet.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 43°F and a wind speed of 5 knots from 230°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance was 7,372 feet, which accounted for 61% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for safe deceleration. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control and alignment during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score despite a few minor deviations from the target parameters.
