Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,488 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 323 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departure from EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde commenced with a smooth roll down runway 23, the DA40-NG accelerating to liftoff speed of 69 kt in a distance of 468 meters, representing 19% of the available runway length. The aircraft lifted off with a minimal crosswind component of 1 kt, as the wind was blowing at 1 kt from 270°, resulting in a negligible headwind or tailwind effect.
Following a brief enroute level cruise phase, which lasted 2 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 05 at EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde. The approach was initiated from the south-west, with a heading of 52.0° at an altitude of 138 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly below the target of 59 kt, resulting in a touchdown distance of 326 meters, which was 21% of the available runway length. The touchdown speed of 54 kt and the corresponding touchdown rate of -172 fpm were both within acceptable limits.
The landing was completed with a good runway rollout alignment, despite a slight misalignment of 5.0 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance of 518 meters was within the expected range, and the aircraft utilized a minimal amount of fuel, with a total flight distance of 4 nautical miles and a fuel consumption of 0 kg. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind of 1 kt from 270°, contributed to a smooth and controlled landing.
The aircraft touched down on runway 05 at EHGG Groningen Airport Eelde with a good threshold height, indicating a well-executed approach. The threshold speed of 59 kt was slightly below the target, but still within acceptable limits. The touchdown distance of 326 m was satisfactory, and the touchdown speed of 54 kt was also good. The touchdown rate of -172 fpm was within the desired range, demonstrating a controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft was slightly misaligned with the centreline by 5.0 m, which may be attributed to a minor deviation in the approach or a slight drift during the landing roll. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a high level of control and precision during the final stages of the landing. The total landing distance of 518 m, which accounted for 21% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits.
The approach quality was excellent, with a score of 98.8% reflecting a high degree of proficiency and control. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a wind speed of 1 kt at 270 °, were relatively calm, which may have contributed to the smooth landing. Overall, the landing was well-executed, with a good balance of speed, distance, and control.
