Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,864 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,864 m of the 2,753 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 308 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 08L at LROP Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,076 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 25 knots at a direction of 60°. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 23 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile east of the airport, rising from an altitude of 1,340 feet above sea level to 30,213 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,872 feet, in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 58 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 1 mile northwest of Troianul, Romania, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 30,256 feet to 31,173 feet, an increase of 917 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise resumed 2 miles north of LBDO Slavovitsa Airstrip Dolna Mitropoliya, Bulgaria, and lasted for 29 minutes, covering a distance of 164 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 30,814 feet to 1,394 feet, a decrease of 29,420 feet, in 26 minutes and covering a distance of 86 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 17 at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa was made from the north, heading 174.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,256 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 17 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 310 meters and a touchdown speed of 143 knots, which was slightly faster than the target speed. The touchdown rate was firm at -346 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots at a direction of 350°, resulting in a tailwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,790 meters, which accounted for 65% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking from the runway in 5 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 348 nautical miles, and the flight used 2,973 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LATI Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa, achieving a score of 95.8%. The final approach to runway 17 was initiated from the north, heading 174.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,256 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with a touchdown distance of 310 meters, which was considered good. However, the touchdown speed of 143 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, indicating a slightly firm touchdown. The touchdown rate of -346 feet per minute was also firm, suggesting a relatively quick deceleration upon touchdown.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 5.4 meters, which may require some adjustments during the landing roll. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 13°C and a gentle wind of 3 knots from 350°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 3 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,790 meters was 65% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing roll and was able to align the aircraft with the centerline of the runway.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway and coming to a stop in a relatively short distance. However, the slightly firm touchdown and misaligned touchdown position may require some adjustments during future landings.
