Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,560 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 296 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 01R at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport. The Van's RV-10 aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 145 meters, which accounted for 6% of the runway's length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 74 knots, marking the start of the flight.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 330 degrees. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The pilot navigated the aircraft into a right-hand pattern, entering the circuit from runway 01R. The distance covered during this phase was less than 1 nautical mile in 25 seconds.
The right-hand pattern crosswind leg was completed in under 1 nautical mile in 20 seconds. The pilot then initiated a pattern downwind turn, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile at an angle of 72.3 degrees to the runway. The downwind leg itself took 38 seconds to complete, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
As the aircraft approached the base leg, the pilot initiated a turn, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles at an angle of 95.5 degrees to the runway. The base leg was completed in under 1 nautical mile in 10 seconds. The final turn was initiated, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile in 81 seconds.
The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 01R, heading 27.0 degrees at an altitude of 36 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was completed on the runway, which had a length of 2,560 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was achieved at 69 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 293 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 63 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -259 feet per minute (fpm). However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned, with the aircraft landing 3,505.6 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions during landing were similar to those encountered during takeoff, with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 329 degrees.
The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the headwind component was 5 knots. The total flight distance was 6 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 11 minutes. The aircraft used 8 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Van's RV-10 aircraft successfully landed on runway 01R at KLAS Harry Reid International Airport, achieving a score of 89.0%. The final approach was initiated from the southwest, heading 27.0° at 0 nm and 36 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, with a threshold height that met the required standards.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was recorded at 69 kt, which is within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown speed of 63 kt was slightly higher than the ideal speed, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing technique. The touchdown distance of 293 m was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and landing.
The landing rate of -259 fpm was considered fair, suggesting that the pilot could have made adjustments to achieve a smoother touchdown. Despite this, the overall landing performance was satisfactory. However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 3,505.6 m from the centreline, indicating a need for improvement in terms of alignment and control during the final stages of the approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 °C and a wind speed of 8 kt at 329°. The crosswind component was 7 kt, while the headwind component was 5 kt. These conditions presented a moderate challenge for the pilot, but the aircraft's performance and the pilot's skills were sufficient to overcome them and achieve a successful landing.
