Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 500 ft gate: off the centreline and speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,411 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,411 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 343 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the OV-10 Bronco taxiing from the parking area to the runway at PASC Deadhorse Airport, a process that took 8 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 24R, with a takeoff distance of 492 meters, which was 25% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 97 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of PASC Deadhorse Airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 2 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 576 feet above sea level to 1,078 feet, an increase of 502 feet in 1 minute, covering 1 nautical mile.
The enroute level cruise began 1 mile south of PASC Deadhorse Airport and lasted 3 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles. The aircraft then started another enroute climb 10 miles south of the airport, ascending from 523 feet to 2,531 feet, an increase of 2,007 feet in 3 minutes, covering 11 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 21 miles south of PASC Deadhorse Airport, with the aircraft descending from 2,713 feet to 2,218 feet, a decrease of 495 feet in 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise then began 23 miles north of SAG Sagwon Airport and lasted 15 minutes, covering 61 nautical miles.
The aircraft continued to climb and descend, with enroute climbs starting 22 miles northeast of PAGB Galbraith Lake Airport, 11 miles north of PAGB, and 1 mile northeast of PAGB. The enroute level cruises began 16 miles northeast of PAGB, 7 miles north of PAGB, and 6 miles northeast of 5CD Chandalar Shelf Airport.
The final approach to runway 20 at PACX Coldfoot Airport was made from the northeast, with the aircraft heading 210.0° at 1 nautical mile and 351 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 341 meters and a touchdown speed of 84 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -200 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 16°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 269°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 465 meters, which was 33% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.3 meters from the centerline.
The total flight distance was 194 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 57 minutes. The aircraft used 287 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The OV-10 Bronco aircraft successfully landed at PACX Coldfoot Airport, achieving a score of 95.9%. The final approach to runway 20 was initiated from the north east, heading 210.0° at 1 nautical mile and 351 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated good control and precision during the approach, ultimately landing safely on the runway.
The landing was executed on runway 20, which has a length of 1,411 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 94 kt, which may have been due to various factors such as wind resistance or the aircraft's performance characteristics.
The touchdown distance was good at 341 meters, and the touchdown speed of 84 kt was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -200 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down smoothly and safely. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's flight path.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 2 kt at 269°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, and the headwind component was 1 kt, which did not significantly impact the landing. The total landing distance was 465 meters, which is approximately 33% of the runway length.
During the rollout, the aircraft's alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.3 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's flight path or a slight drift in the wind. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft demonstrated good control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases.
