Get the gear down before the gate
Next time
Lower the gear before the stabilisation gate rather than configuring late on approach.
What happened: Gear was not down by the approach gate, and sink came back at 219 fpm after the flare had arrested it. Gear left late in the approach often carries into a rushed, unstable flare where the sink return follows.
Watch for: Gear position indicator, confirmed down before each stabilisation gate.
Departure
Rotate the moment the speed tape reaches 70 kt, not after it.
What happened: Rotation was held until 81 kt, 11 kt past the 70 kt rotation target. Carrying that much extra speed into rotation usually adds unwanted energy right at liftoff.
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: gear still up and wings 11° of bank, against a 10° limit.
At the 500 ft gate: gear still up.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,351 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 379 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Diamond DA42 Twin Star taxied from the parking area to the departure runway in less than 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 30L at KVRB Vero Beach Regional Airport, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 82 kt. The takeoff distance recorded was 527 m, representing 24 % of the runway. Ambient conditions were a temperature of 16 °C with wind from 270 ° at 4 kt, including a 2 kt crosswind component and a 4 kt headwind.
Climb began approximately 1 mile south west of Gifford, Florida, where the aircraft rose from 1,029 ft asl to 5,008 ft asl, an altitude gain of 3,979 ft achieved in 4 minutes while traversing 7 nm.
Level cruise was established 3 miles south east of Fellsmere, Florida, and was maintained for 22 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 56 nm.
Descent commenced 1 mile south west of Titusville, Florida, with the aircraft descending from 4,997 ft asl to 2,505 ft asl, a loss of 2,493 ft over 3 minutes and a distance of 9 nm.
A subsequent level cruise segment started 4 miles south west of 3FD6 Tradewinds Aerodrome Scottsmoor, lasting 2 minutes and covering 4 nm.
The next descent began 4 miles north east of FD92 Southerland Strip Geneva, Florida, where altitude decreased from 2,505 ft asl to 1,548 ft asl, a reduction of 958 ft in 2 minutes across 4 nm.
A final cruise phase was initiated 2 miles north of FD92 Southerland Strip Geneva, lasting 2 minutes and encompassing 4 nm.
The aircraft entered final approach to runway 27R at KSFB Orlando Sanford International Airport from the east, flying a heading of 273.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,306 ft agl.
Touchdown occurred on runway 27R, whose total length is 3,351 m; the threshold height at 56 ft agl was slightly above target and the threshold speed was well above target at 81 kt. The aircraft landed with a touchdown distance of 378 m and a speed of 70 kt, the rate of descent being firm at minus 358 fpm. Alignment on touchdown was perfect. Local weather reported a temperature of 15 ° C, wind from 275 ° at 4 kt, with a 0 kt crosswind and a 4 kt headwind.
Rollout distance measured 702 m, representing 21 % of the runway, and runway alignment remained perfect throughout the deceleration phase.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 90nm, required 38 minutes of elapsed time, and consumed 25 kg of fuel.
The Diamond DA42 Twin Star entered the final approach to runway 27R at KSFB Orlando Sanford International Airport from the east on a heading of 273.0° at 4 nm and 1,306 ft agl, with temperature 15 °C, wind 4 kt from 275°, a 0 kt cross-wind and a 4 kt head-wind; the aircraft’s final-approach profile was recorded with a score of 95.5 %.
At the threshold the height was 56 ft agl, noted as slightly above target, and the threshold speed was well above target at 81 kt.
Touchdown occurred 378 m down the runway, a distance described as good, with a touchdown speed of 70 kt that was a little fast, a firm touchdown rate of -358 fpm, and runway-touchdown alignment perfect.
The rollout covered a total landing distance of 702 m, representing 21 % of the 3,351 m runway, and rollout alignment was perfect.
Refine speed management to achieve the target threshold and touchdown speeds, which will help reduce the firm touchdown rate. Adjust the flare timing to match the slightly high threshold height, ensuring a smoother transition to ground contact.
