Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,042 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 487 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Black Square Starship N786BP taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KFFZ Falcon Field, a process that took 8 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 22L, with a takeoff distance of 3,717 feet, which accounted for 73% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 107 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started 1 mile southwest of KFFZ Falcon Field Mesa, Arizona, and reached an altitude of 30,552 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,213 feet from the initial 2,339 feet. This climb took 14 minutes and covered 31 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 3 miles south of KGYR Phoenix Goodyear Airport, Goodyear, Arizona, and lasted for 86 minutes, covering 379 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 3 miles southwest of Isla Vista, California, and the aircraft descended from 29,577 feet to 3,378 feet, a decrease of 26,199 feet in 12 minutes, covering 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 5 miles southwest of Isla Vista, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. However, this was short-lived, as the aircraft began another descent, this time from 2,521 feet to 89 feet, a decrease of 2,432 feet in 4 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 25 at KSBA Santa Barbara Municipal Airport was from the east, with a heading of 267.0 degrees at 0 nautical miles and 78 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 25 was successful, with a runway length of 6,042 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was 110 knots. The touchdown distance was 485 feet, and the touchdown speed was 107 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -102 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather at the time of landing was characterized by a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 160 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, and the tailwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 3,291 feet, which accounted for 54% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered 430 nautical miles, took 123 minutes, and used 1,477 pounds of fuel.
The aircraft, Black Square Starship N786BP, successfully landed at KSBA Santa Barbara Municipal Airport with a score of 100.0%. The final approach to runway 25 was initiated from the east, heading 267.0° at an altitude of 78 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway.
The pilot executed a precise landing, touching down on the runway with a speed of 107 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed of 110 knots. The touchdown distance of 485 feet was also within the expected range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -102 feet per minute (fpm) was smooth, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and even rate of descent throughout the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 70°F and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 160°. This resulted in a crosswind component of 7 knots and a tailwind component of 2 knots. Despite these wind conditions, the pilot was able to maintain perfect runway touchdown alignment, indicating excellent control and precision.
The total landing distance of 3,291 feet was 54% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot was able to maintain a high level of control and precision throughout the landing, resulting in a smooth and efficient rollout. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control and stability throughout the entire landing process.
Overall, the landing of Black Square Starship N786BP at KSBA Santa Barbara Municipal Airport was a textbook example of precision and control, with a score of 100.0% indicating a flawless execution of the landing.
