Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,795 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 287 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 21 at CYQX Gander International Airport / CFB Gander. The takeoff distance was 1,130 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 240 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was also 2 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb approximately 1 mile southwest of Deadmans Pond Gander, climbing from an altitude of 1,473 feet above sea level to 38,444 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,971 feet in 37 minutes, covering a distance of 283 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started at a latitude of 52.8282588 and a longitude of -50.3215288, lasting for 127 minutes and covering a distance of 1,416 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent approximately 48 miles west of Hvalba, Faroe Islands, descending from 38,837 feet above sea level to 1,713 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,125 feet in 12 minutes, covering a distance of 56 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 30 at EKVG Vágar Airport was made from the southeast, heading 298.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,444 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 30 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 283 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The touchdown speed was a little fast at 129 knots, but the touchdown rate was excellent at -60 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 120 degrees. The crosswind was 0 knots, and the tailwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 842 meters, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took approximately 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,761 nautical miles, taking 182 minutes, and the aircraft used 9,926 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at EKVG Vágar Airport, showcasing a high level of precision and control. The final approach to runway 30 was initiated from the south east, with the aircraft heading 298.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,444 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's ability to navigate the aircraft to the correct runway and maintain a steady course is a testament to their expertise.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 135 knots, which is considered a good threshold speed. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and was able to slow it down to a safe speed before touchdown. The touchdown distance of 283 meters was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed and altitude during the landing phase.
However, the touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly faster than ideal, which may have been due to various factors such as wind conditions or the pilot's decision to prioritize a smooth landing over a perfectly controlled touchdown. Nevertheless, the touchdown rate of -60 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown smoothly and without any significant deceleration.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 16°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 120°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the tailwind component was 4 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed. Despite this, the pilot was able to maintain perfect runway touchdown alignment, ensuring a safe and controlled landing.
The total landing distance of 842 meters was 47% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot was able to slow the aircraft down efficiently and maintain control throughout the landing phase. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the post-landing phase and bring it to a safe stop.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 737-800 at EKVG Vágar Airport was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and control throughout the final approach and landing phases.
