Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,005 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,379 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 36C at KMEM Memphis International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,160 feet, which accounted for 19% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 138 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 0 knots. After departing from KMEM, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The climb took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 15 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,346 feet above sea level to 12,441 feet above sea level, an increase of 11,095 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which started 2 miles southwest of TN47 Needham's Airport Arlington. This phase of the flight lasted 22 minutes and covered a distance of 128 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 10 miles north of KMRC Maury County Airport Columbia/Mount Pleasant. The descent took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 31 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 12,491 feet above sea level to 1,837 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,654 feet.
The final approach to runway 02C at KBNA Nashville International Airport was made from the south, with a heading of 18.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,255 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 02C, which had a length of 8,005 feet, was successful, with a good threshold height. However, the threshold speed was too high at 112 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,383 feet, but the touchdown speed was too fast at 103 knots. The touchdown rate was good at -187 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot. The total landing distance was 2,621 feet, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 30 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 182 nautical miles and took 42 minutes, using 2,913 pounds of fuel.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at KBNA Nashville International Airport, achieving a score of 93.5%. The final approach to runway 02C was initiated from the south, with a heading of 18.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,255 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft successfully touched down on the runway, which has a length of 8,005 feet.
However, there were some areas for improvement during the landing. The threshold speed was too high at 112 knots, indicating that the pilot may have been able to slow down more efficiently before touchdown. Additionally, the touchdown speed of 103 knots was also too fast, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to maintain a more controlled descent. On the other hand, the touchdown rate of -187 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down smoothly.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline, with an offset of 29 feet. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's approach path or a miscalculation of the runway alignment. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, and the tailwind component was even weaker at 1 knot.
The total landing distance of 2,621 feet was within the acceptable range, accounting for approximately 33% of the runway length. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline, with an offset of 30 feet. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's rollout path or a miscalculation of the runway alignment. Overall, while there were some areas for improvement, the Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at KBNA Nashville International Airport, achieving a score of 93.5%.
